Changing the world is an honourable notion, but where does one start?
In 2004 Marion Parsonage asked herself, “What can one individual do to bring about positive change?”
In 2005 she decided the time had come to work with local schools. Marion believed that if we can make a positive impact on children, then we will change the world – little by little - for the better.
She then said, “If we could recognise and acknowledge the innately kind nature of human beings, how different the world would be.”
Within weeks Marion had approached three local primary schools in Ballarat. Their principals recognised the potential to be gained through joining an innovative student based program designed to support and reinforce a school culture that celebrates kindness.
Each of the original schools approached in May 2005 is still actively participating in the Act of Kindness Award program. In fact, Black Hill Primary School, Ballarat has now gained the support of two sponsors - this enables it to offer two Act of Kindness Awards each week.
On 1 June 2007, when the official program was launched 8 sponsored schools came on board. First term 2008 saw 23 schools engaged across Victoria, and the program welcomed Avondale College, Cooranbong as the first school from N.S.W. By the end of T1, 2009 there were 30 schools registered – by the end of T2, 2009 numbers reached 45 when the first secondary school in Australia came on board – Brighton Secondary School, Adelaide. The program continues to grow and evolve rapidly across Australia. Enquiries are now being received from schools overseas.
The Act of Kindness Award program is positively influencing the lives of thousands of people of all ages.
